We are lucky to have ongoing support from community members, local groups, organisations, and businesses which helps to keep us running.
As well as helping to sustain the programme, the aim of working in partnership with local groups, organisations, and businesses is to develop small sustainable projects involving the whole community.
Building connections is important as it creates community cohesion, reduces waste through the implementation of local recycling programmes, and provides support to the ongoing growth and maintenance of the care home gardens.
Below is a list of the Sustainability Partnerships we have already set up:
Local Recycling Scheme
Our Little Onions collect spent coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scrapes and juice pulp for use in compost to create rich soil for our organically grown plants. We are currently collect from the care homes, our own homes, and local cafes. We have also teamed up a local children's nursery who donate their left over pots and any expired garden products to the gardens for use in our plant nursery. A local business save their paper scrapes for us and we use these to make seed packets. A couple of local organic growing groups provide us with ongoing support to find new suppliers for garden products and helpful gardening advice.
We are always seeking new ways to create mutually beneficial connections with local business and community organisations. If you have any creative ways to connect with us then we would love to hear from you!
Activity & Project Funding
A local grocer allows us to sell a a wide range of fruit, veg and herbs at their store. They very generously give us 100% of the proceeds. The local markets provides ongoing funds to employ a handy-man to work alongside the volunteers and run carpentry related projects. A grant funds the role of a Coordinator to oversee the running of the Club. The local council offers a range of grants that can be applied for to support different projects down at the gardens.
Volunteer Team
We have a team of dedicated and skilled volunteers who support the Little Onions at weekly activities, working bees, markets and events. We are very grateful to each and every one of them, as they are crucial ongoing delivery and success of the Club.
